The Burke Center for Youth is a 501(c)3 nonprofit organization formed in 1973 to care for Texas children who are removed from their homes by TDFPS due to abuse and neglect, or who are placed into residential care by the justice system. They are partially funded by TDFPS but rely heavily on funds raised through donations from individuals, businesses and grants.
Burke Center Mission: Help children in crisis, build self-respect, self-reliance and self-esteem and to help them build more hopeful futures. The ultimate goal is to stop the cycle of abuse and neglect of children.
The Burke Center has served thousands of children through two programs:
PATHFINDERS RESIDENTIAL TREATMENT PROGRAM: Serves at-risk boys ages 11 to 17 in a setting where they can recover from abuse and neglect in a supportive environment. They have:
Every young man entering the program must work incredibly hard. It is not an easy program. Some will be in the program for a year and some of them for two years.
FOSTER CARE PROGRAM: Serves children throughout Texas with basic and therapeutic needs. They place boys and girls, infants to age 17, in supportive loving homes. They manage those homes closely by going to see the children at least every two weeks. The agency staff is available 24 hours a day for foster parent support and to respond to calls in the middle of the night from TDFPS to place children just removed from their home for abuse or neglect. They recruit, license, train and manage foster homes from offices in Brownsville, Brownwood, Corpus Christi, Laredo and the main office in Driftwood (near Austin). In the past month, they have had three children adopted by foster parents.
